GONNA DO’s!

Mayor Laura Lothian Will Continue to Expand and Improve Upon Her City Council Initiatives, Plans, and Policies Currently in Action:

LAURA’S Current Initiatives IN ACTION

  • I will continue to simplify and expedite the permit process for builders in La Mesa to cut the red tape that prevents progress.

  • Protect restaurant outdoor sidewalk dining from harmful overregulation.

  • Stay vigilant about La Mesa’s public spaces remaining litter-free.

  • The Community Cleanup Coordinator also removes graffiti. Zero tolerance for graffiti.

  • Quickly facilitate the delivery of Temporary* Speed Humps to neighborhoods seeking relief from speeding cars.

    * "Temporary" is a misnomer. These heavy-duty, vulcanized, recycled rubber speed humps are durable and will last for years.

  • Support La Mesa Police and Heartland Fire publicly & monetarily.

  • Continue supporting the La Mesa Village Association responsible for popular events such as Oktoberfest, Holiday in the Village, Farmers Market, & Car Show. Support City-sponsored events like Concerts and Movies in the Park.

  • Help every single La Mesan or person conducting business in La Mesa who calls, texts, messages, or emails me with their specific problems.

GONNA DO’S

LAURA’S TOP NEW Initiatives

  • Stop the surge of public transit apartment buildings lacking adequate parking spaces by taking advantage of the exclusionary clause offered by AB 2097:

A public agency can impose or enforce minimum automobile parking requirements on a project located within one-half mile of public transit if the public agency finds that not imposing or enforcing minimum automobile parking requirements on the development would have a substantially negative impact on existing residential or commercial parking within ½ mile of the housing development project.

  • Scour existing downtown infrastructure that can become a parking space by negotiating parking lot leases with businesses, redesigning parking lots for additional spaces, add Parking T’s to all streets in District One, move bike racks from streets to sidewalks for extra spaces, stencil smaller spaces for street legal golf carts, motorcycles and e-bikes, enforce ban on commercial trucks and campers that illegally parking on public streets. Eventually build a parking structure.

  • Attract popular restaurants and retailers to open in La Mesa with demographic studies showing La Mesa is a smart investment. Oversee the development process remains streamlined and geared to customer service.

  • Work with a hospitality group to open La Mesa's and East County's first boutique hotel with lobby bar and rooftop restaurant.

  • Of La Mesa’s 14 parks, only one serves the southwestern portion of the city. Waite Park is long overdue and needs to be a priority for City Hall.

  • Restore Collier Park's Spring House and consider partnering with a snack shop to cover the cost and service the crowds who visit and play at Collier Park.

  • Properly staff Parks & Rec to effectively maintain our public parks and bathrooms. Our bathrooms can be kind of yucky.

  • Appoint qualified people to boards and commissions who have La Mesa's best interests at heart and not hidden agendas. i.e., Why does the Design Review Board approve boilerplate, soulless, freeway-style apartments that do not complement La Mesa's 114-year history and charm?

  • Ensure that public art is tasteful, universally appealing, and non-political.

  • Join forces with San Diego's 18 mayors and the County Board of Supervisors to solve regional homelessness in a cohesive, deliberate manner.

One possible approach is to provide a shelter in every town in the County proportionate to its homeless population. Must be 100% participation, or towns without shelters will export their homeless to towns with shelters.

Another approach would be the www.SunbreakRanch.com concept, which would need state or federal dominion.
